They were often runaway farmhands, deserter soldiers, or people pushed to the margins of society, roaming the Great Hungarian Plain and the Transdanubian region while fleeing from the authorities. They were seen both as lawbreakers and as folk heroes: although they robbed and looted, tradition holds that they often took from the rich and helped the poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their romantic image, free way of life, the world of countryside taverns (<em>cs\u00e1rd\u00e1k<\/em>), and the atmosphere of the Hungarian plains remain an important part of national heritage.
